Everyone has an opinion on events in Israel and Gaza. Here’s mine, for what it’s worth…
Hamas is near universally seen as a terrorist entity, and its slaughter of hundreds upon hundreds of Israeli civilians confirms this truth. Such behaviour has no place in a civilised society, and, criticism of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories aside, no moral equivalence can be drawn between Hamas and Israel.
Hamas is not a liberation movement, but a cult in which the glorification of death is written into its founding charter. Hamas is every horrible thing said about it, but we should never forget that people are not their rulers.
The strife of the Palestinian people is our strife, and the suffering of Israelis our suffering. Lose sight of this, and we cease to be human.
I stand with both Israel and Palestine, and call for an immediate end to attacks on civilians. In defending its people, the State of Israel should focus on dismantling Hamas, and avoid targeting the infrastructure upon which the residents of Gaza depend for their lives.
